Late Strike Lifts FC Denver Over Sockers FC
A late goal from Denver FC’s Kyle Crouse eliminated Sockers FC from the 2019 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
In the 89th minute, Crouse fired a stunning goal from 25 yards out that swerved by Sockers goalkeeper Brin Lapuh to give FC Denver a 2-1 victory.
The Sockers started the game quickly, creating the game’s first chance in the third minute. Andres Ruiz saw his shot saved by Jacob Peterson who was nearly caught wrong footed.
FC Denver slowly eased their way into the match by controlling possession in the first half, and a breakthrough came in the 34th minute.
Lashaw Salta’s shot was saved by Lapuh, but the ball rebounded directly to FC Denver’s Cesar Castillo who slotted the ball home for the opening goal.
Sockers FC turned up the pressure in the second half looking for an equalizer.
The Sockers would create chances from two set pieces.
In the 63rd minute from a corner kick, Michael Agboola had is close range header saved by Peterson. But just one minute later, the Sockers would equalize, from another corner kick.
Again it was Agboola getting free on a set piece. This time, Agboola’s header rebounded to substitute Grant Mobley who tapped in to tie the game 1-1.
“Grant Mobley came in and I thought he was a real positive influence on the game for us and I thought he made a big difference,” Sockers Head Coach Johnny Clifford said.
The teams would go back and forth for the next 20 minutes trading chances without either side converting.
Crouse then struck in the 89th minute to give FC Denver the edge.
The Sockers applied late pressure in a desperate attempt to tie the game, but couldn’t find another equalizer.
“We showed a little bit of bite, we just didn’t have the legs to get the job done tonight,” Clifford said.
Sockers FC will look to bounce back on Saturday, May 18th against Katy 1895 FC in its Lone Star Conference home opener.
“We now have a week and half until our next game, and we’ve got time to prepare and get back to the basics,” Clifford said. “I think you’ll see a different team this time next week.”
