Sockers blank Sol in Albuquerque, 1-0

ALBUQUERQUE  Midland/Odessa Sockers FC closed out a successful opening weekend in Premier Development League play on Sunday night as they picked up three more points with a 1-0 win over the Albuquerque Sol.

The Sockers looked as if they got on the board in the sixth minute as forward Leon Taylor found the back of the net, but the goal was waved off on an offsides call.

However, Taylor and the Sockers though would not have to wait long to get that goal back. In the 14th minute, Bruno Henrique - who scored both of the Sockers’ goals on Friday - slotted a no-look pass with the outside of his foot to Taylor. Taylor then finished the sequence with a one-time off his left foot for the goal.

A couple of other chance eluded the Sockers (2-0-0, 6 pts) in the first half, but they were able to hold on to their 1-0 advantage throughout the second half, despite constant pressure from Albuquerque (0-3-0, 0 pts).

The team will now return home and face the Mississippi Brilla (1-0-0, 3 pts) at Grande Communications Stadium on Thursday, May 26 and Saturday, May 28. Both games kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

Mississippi - the defending Mid South division champion - was victorious in their PDL opener on May 14 at home against Peachtree City MOBA, 2-1. The Brilla also battled the Oklahoma City Energy FC of the USL to a scoreless draw in full time in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup, before falling in penalty kicks, 10-9.
