Sockers unable to capture Mid South crown

MIDLAND — Midland/Odessa Sockers FC were unable to win their first division title in franchise history as they were defeated 2-1 in Saturday night's regular season finale by the OKC Energy U23 at Grande Communications Stadium.

The Sockers took advantage early on thanks to a foul in the box by OKC on Grant Mobley in the 23rd minute, which led to a Fernando Machado penalty kick attempt. Machado punched the kick in to his left to give the Sockers an early 1-0 advantage.

OKC's equalizer came just eight minutes later in the 31st minute off of a corner kick. Sockers FC were unable to cleanly clear the ball out and it ended up going to Josh Taylor on a one-timer and he punched it in to tie the game.

The game-winner for the OKC Energy U23 came in the 84th minute as Raul Beniet lofted a free kick towards the post and Sebastian Pineda who was able to maneuver his way past the defender and knock it in for the goal.

For the Sockers, they finish the season with 27 points which ties the most in team history. The team finished with 27 points in the inaugural season of 2009. The eight regular season wins also matches a franchise-high set in 2009.

The four-team field for the PDL Southern Conference has been set as Sockers FC and OKC Energy U23 will represent the Mid South Division and The Villages SC and South Florida Surf will represent the Southeast Division. The playoffs will begin on Friday, July 22 with the pairings and host site to be announced on Sunday.
