Aztex Continue March to Division Crown, Beat Sockers 6-0
MIDLAND, TX—The Austin Aztex again demonstrated that they are one of the top teams in the Premier Development League, claiming their nation-leading 11th victory in a 6-0 win over Sockers FC.
Austin (11-1-1, 34 points) has clinched the Mid-South title, ending the four-year reign of the Laredo Heat atop the division.  The Sockers (3-8-2, 11 points) are now tied for fourth place with the Houston Dutch Lions.
The Aztex and Heat have clinched the division’s two postseason berths.
Due to a variety of circumstances, the Sockers played several new faces, as the team looks to establish its core for next season.  Although the Sockers controlled the physicality and tempo of play initially, the Aztex were able to capitalize on their early offensive opportunities.
Austin forward Kris Tyrpak opened the scoring in the 12th minute with his ninth goal of the season (assisted by Tony Rocha).  Tyrpak and Rocha were two of the four Aztex to register multiple points in the match (Tyrpak: 1 goal, 1 assist; Rocha: 1 goal, 2 assists; Jesus Cortes: 1 goal, 1 assist; Sito Seoane: 1 goal, 1 assist).
On July 5, the teams played a very close, defensive match, which Austin won, 2-1.  After 25 minutes on Thursday, the Aztex led 2-0, but the Sockers had two strong opportunities to cut into the deficit.  Austin goalkeeper Devin Cook was stellar, though, making six saves en route to his eighth shutout (he leads the nation in shutouts and wins (10)).
Overall, Austin scored four goals in 19 minutes to put the game out of reach, and they led, 5-0, at halftime.  In the second half, Walker Hume added his second goal of the season (78th minute).
The Sockers conclude the regular season on Saturday (July 20) against the Heat at Grande Communications Stadium.  The gates will open at 6:30 p.m., and kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The first 500 fans will receive a free Sockers window cling, and the team will be hosting a silent auction on the concourse of all game-worn, autographed jerseys from the season.
