The Sockers FC fall to the 1st place Austin Aztex 2-1, at Grande Communications Stadium in Midland. It what was a physical matchup on both sides.
The first half both teams were trying to establish dominance. Though there were many shots on goal by both the Aztex and the SockersFC, there were more knockdowns, with elbows, sliding tackles and bruises. Suprisingly, not one yellow card was issued in the first half.
In the second half, more whistles were blown and the Sockers defense gave way. Austin Aztex drew first blood in the 51st minute as #5 Kalen Ryden assisted #27 Eddie Campbell for the first goal of the game.
The Sockers FC fought back. After several shots on goal by the Sockers, and some great saves by Aztex goalkeeper Devin Cook, the Sockers finally broke through with a barage of offensive attacks when Tucker Hume assisted Conrad Goulbourne for the goal tying the game 1-1, in the 62nd minute.
Both teams got more physical and a yellowcard was given to Ricardo Yeverino close to the 75th minute on a behind the man sliding tackle.
After the announcement of the Laredo Heat getting upset by the Mississippi Brila, it looked like a result for the Sockers FC would give them a boost for that final playoff spot.
However, in the 89th minute, the Aztex overwhelmed the Sockers defense a shot towards the Sockers goal sent goalkeeper sent goal keeper Jason Babyak diving for the ball. The ball squirted out of his hands into the oncoming forward "Chuy" Cortez to score the game winning goal.
The game was played in front of a crowd of 1,969 to celebrate the Sockers final home game a long with postgame fireworks.
The silver lining of this defeat is that the Heat lost as well. With two games left on the Sockers schedule the SockersFC are (6-4-2) with 20 pts, ahead of the Laredo Heat who are (4-4-3) with 15 pts. The Sockers last two matchups of the season are on the road against the Austin Aztex and the Houston Dutch Lions. Two victories for the Sockers would clinch a playoff spot. The Heat have 3 more matches left. Two against Mississippi, and one against the Houston Dutch Lions. The Austin Aztex with their victory over the Sockers clinches the division for the Aztex.
The Sockers will travel to Austin next Friday July 11th, to take on the Aztex for the final matchup of the season between these two teams.
